the latest purchase...

My first purchase from 1st Dibs, very exciting, is a classic 50's Robsjohn-Gibbings slipper chair that is in need of a little help....look at it...its a bit sad really - don't you think? (This one DEFINITELY needs recovering, as well as a new cushion)

She'll scrub up nicely I think. I think its also time to admit I have a bit of a problem with buying furniture. My husband is just about ready to confiscate my credit cards... At the rate I'm going we won't be able to buy a place to live in! My justification was that it was much cheaper than the other Robsjohn-Gibbings slipper chairs listed. That is, of course, until I pay to ship it from Southampton (NY) to Hong Kong and then have it recovered...

That chair is LOVELY! You'll have to update once you get it all spiffed up.

Great find, great lines. I can see this in a stripe or one big fleur de lie on the back cushion and one on the seat. Or, a minature print but that might be a bit boring unless you had a lumbar pillow that was a contrast to it.

love how low the chair is, what kind of fabric do you think you'll recover it with?

Suzy, Lovely, lovely chair. It'll never be something you'll get tired of. On the subject of reupholstering chairs, I'd like to know your opinion about how it affects the value. I have a pair of mid century Milo Baughman chairs covered in vinyl that I would like reupholster but I am a bit hesitant to do so since I don't know if it will decrease its value.

hi costa, rica and suzy-

this is mona- guest blogger over at maison21. i was recently tagged to reveal 7 unknown facts about myself by felicity over at all things bright and beautiful:

http://maison21.blogspot.com/2008/01/guest-blogger-gots-game.html

in turn, i had to tag 7 other doggies and kitties to do guest blogs too, revealing those 7 unknown facts about themselves, and then of course they have to do the same. since i don't know a lot of other doggies and kitties that might have blog access, i picked you! my dad apologizes profusely as he thinks this is nothing but a blog version of a chain letter, but i think it's fun. and they asked ME, not him, so i'm asking costa and rica! but of course i understand if they are too busy napping to participate...

love,

mona

ps- my dad loves your chair, and though he shudders to think of the cost to ship to hong kong, he knows you will be very happy with it...

hey folks! thanks for showing so much interest in my new chair. latest update...its being picked up by the shipping company early next week - the quote for freighting it here was not too bad, but of course my hubby is not too happy about it all! My current fave choice for receovering is a wool satin by Donghia, in a pretty neutral colour (of course!). Will post pics once its finally done (with the new bench seats too)...

Michelle - to answer your question, I'm not an expert on antiques/vintage furniture so I'm not 100% sure what recovering would do to the value, but in my opinion, I would say if you recovered them in something that was sympathetic to the design, style and era and it was done well - I would have thought it would add value. There are some die hard buyers who want original fabric, but I think most would want something that was new but didn't take away from the original design. Anyone else have any thoughts or recommendations for Michelle?

I can't wait to see what you do with this! What a great piece! Please post pics of your fabric options and the final product ;)

Thanks Mabelle! I definitely will be posting fabric options to share with all...but it might be later in the year til I can actually get it recovered. We have another fun project coming up (that I will post in due course) that will be taking up all our finances...

I know it won't be the same, but can't you find a craftsman in HK to make you similar furniture? In any case, that chair is heaven, and will go wonderfully with Ming or Ming-style pieces (which I hope you are buying!!!).

Hello Aesthete - yes, we do have a few ming pieces - they are stunning pieces from that era, and I can see how JM Frank was influenced by this era. It is quite easy to get furniture made here, and in the south of the mainland, I've done that also with a few pieces. Problem is, I also have a few Japanese pieces and am getting to a point where I'm running out of space for it all!
